Filling in a comparison site isn't the only way — and often not the best. Approaching three local specialists yourself yields sharper prices, more personal contact and keeps you in control of your own data. Find three companies yourself
Start with Google Maps and search 'dormer + your town'. Pick companies with at least 25 reviews and an average of 4.5 or higher. Check for KOMO certification, membership of a trade body (VWBN, Bouwgarant) and how long they've been around. Pick three different profiles: a local specialist, a regional prefab supplier and a traditional carpenter.
What belongs in your enquiry
Address, photos of the roof (inside and outside), desired width, material preference, number of windows, front or rear of house, and whether you want insulation that meets current R-value requirements. State whether you handle the permit yourself or want the company to. The more complete your enquiry, the more accurate the quote.
Putting quotes side by side
Ask for the same specification in all quotes (same material, insulation package, windows). Otherwise you're comparing apples with pears. Watch for line items like 'crane work', 'removal of old roof section', 'interior finishing', 'lead or zinc work' and 'VAT'. The lowest total is rarely the best pick; weigh completeness and warranty.
