Installing a dormer yourself: can you

Roofing experience (lead detail, tiles), familiarity with cutting openings in load-bearing roofs (understanding rafters, purlins, load transfer), Building Code knowledge (R 4.7 insulation, ventilation, fire).

Proper fall protection (harness, line, anchor), at least 2 capable helpers, and access to specialist tools (circular saw for roof board, lead dresser, EPDM glue). Missing any: hire it out.

On a €7,500 prefab install you typically save €1,500-€2,500 by DIY. For that you take on 40-60 hours plus liability. At any net hourly comparison (€30-€55/hr) plus risk it's rarely favourable.

Costs people forget: tool hire (€200-€400/weekend), fall gear (€150-€300), waste container (€250-€450), crane with operator (€700-€1,200 half-day). Total realistically €5,000-€7,000, not €3,500.

DIY means you're 'principal and contractor' — all Building Code liability sits with you. On leak, fire or structural damage your home insurance often doesn't cover (renovations by uncertified parties excluded).

On permit-required dormers you must prove compliance with permit drawings. Faulty execution can trigger penalty (€2,500-€10,000) and forced rectification. At later sale you must inform buyers of DIY status; many see this as value-reducing.

If you're a professional roofer or have a married building-trade background and this fits your expertise. Or: a very simple replacement with identical size, lead and insulation.

For most owners: comparable to overhauling your own car — possible but below average in result and risk. Ask a pro for a 'half-pro' setup: you handle interior and demolition, the pro handles placement and exterior. Saves €800-€1,500 with warranty retained.
