Dormer materials

PVC, timber, composite cladding, polyester, HPL, EPDM and lead. What they cost, how they age, and which one fits your house.

Short answer

Which material to pick?

There is no single best material. PVC and composite cladding are the most popular for their low maintenance. Timber gives the most traditional look but needs periodic painting. Polyester shells are quick to install. HPL is the most durable but the most expensive.

FAQ

Veelgestelde vragen

01Which material lasts the longest?
High-pressure laminate (HPL) panels and well-maintained timber both last decades. PVC and composite cladding are very low-maintenance but quality varies a lot per supplier.
02Is PVC the cheapest option?
Usually yes on material cost, but the lifespan and look depend heavily on the quality grade. A premium PVC dormer can cost as much as a timber one.
03What about polyester dormers?
Polyester one-piece dormers are lightweight, watertight by design and quick to install. Visible repairs are the main downside if they get damaged.
04How important is the type of lead flashing?
Very. Lead and flashing detailing is the single biggest factor in long-term watertightness, regardless of which cladding you choose.
Conclusie
Material choice is a long-term decision: pick something you are happy to live with for 25+ years, and value the quality of the install at least as much as the cladding name.
